Financial Support Opportunities for PhD Students at MCN

Seeking Financial Assistance at MCN

Mennonite College of Nursing is a great place to take the next step in your career as a nurse researcher, educator, and clinician. We appreciate your talents and look forward to reviewing your application to the PhD program.

Whether you plan to attend school as a full time or part time student, we know that taking on the additional responsibilities of a doctoral student will be stressful. One area that may be particularly challenging is managing your financial situation while you attend school. MCN is making a concerted effort to provide substantial financial support for doctoral students. to discuss your options.

Competitive Predoctoral Fellowships

The Office of Research and Scholarly Activities staff and faculty advisors will work closely with students to identify and apply for fellowships. Examples of fellowship opportunities include:

  • National Research Service Awards
  • The American Academy of Nursing with support from The John A. Hartford Foundation Building Academic Geriatric Nursing Capacity Awards

    Teaching Fellowships

    Mennonite College of Nursing will award one Teaching Fellowship for $34,000.00 with tuition waiver each academic year. The teaching fellowship provides students with the opportunity to further develop teaching competency in graduate and undergraduate nursing education. The fellow will work with an experienced and recognized teaching expert to design a plan that will include appropriate training and classroom/clinical teaching experience under the direction of qualified nurse educators. Fellows will be expected to carry a teaching assignment commensurate with their qualifications and to promote their personal development as an educator (see guidelines here).

    Graduate Assistantships

    Graduate Assistantships (Research and/or Teaching Assistantships) may be available through Mennonite College of Nursing on a yearly basis. Part-time and full-time assistantships are available. These assistantships include tuition waiver and a monthly stipend. Click here to learn more about graduate assistantships at Illinois State University.

    Incumbant Worker Grant Assistance

    Federal funds may be available to cover tuition and fees for students accepted into the PhD program. Administrators will meet with eligible students and their employer to discuss this opportunity.

    Loan Repayment Plans

    Students may be eligible for these federal or state loan plans that are typically associated with service rendered after completion of the degree in return for partial forgiveness of the loan.

    • Illinois Nurse Educator Loan Repayment Program: This program will be administered through ISAC and will allow nurse educators to receive $5000 in student loan forgiveness each year, for up to four years. For every year of student loan forgiveness received, the recipient must agree to continue working as a nurse educator. To be eligible, a nurse educator will need to be a resident of Illinois and have worked for at least one year in a teaching program in Illinois.
    • Faculty Loan Repayment Program: This federal program provides a financial incentive for degree-trained health professionals from disadvantaged backgrounds to pursue academic careers.

    Scholarships

    Mennonite College of Nursing offers many private scholarships. Students who wish to be considered for MCN scholarships must complete the application form. Click here for a list of scholarships and an application form.
    Please note that all students are required to file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or the Renewal Application if financial need is a criterion.

    Tuition Waivers

    Graduate tuition waivers are awarded on a competitive basis by colleges/departments offering graduate degrees to students who show promise for success and who have not received an assistantship, fellowship, or other award funding tuition costs.     PhD students may be eligible to receive HRSA traineeship monies. Students will automatically be contacted if they are eligible

    Seeking Financial Assistance at ISU

    If you are interested in applying for financial aid at ISU, you should file the current Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon as possible. Applications become available in late December. Electronic applications can be obtained online and paper applications can be obtained from ISU’s Office of Financial Aid.
