Scholarships

Listed below are several private scholarships current nursing students may be eligible for. Please click on the name of the scholarship to see the background information for each one.

MCN Private Scholarships

Anna Ropp Scholarship Fund

Candidates for the Anna Ropp scholarship must be enrolled in good standing at Illinois State University, demonstrate academic achievement, as evidenced by a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale and demonstrate financial need. Preference will be given to a non-traditional nursing student in their junior or senior year, or participating in the RN/BSN or equivalent program or graduate student and who demonstrates concern for body, mind and spiritual aspects of nursing. The funds must be used for educational expenses.

Clara Gerhart Endowed Scholarship

Undergraduate and graduate students are eligible. Candidates must be nursing students enrolled half time to full time. Candidates must demonstrate potential for the field of nursing.

Clara Stutzman Endowed Scholarship

The purposes of The Clara Stutzman Endowed Scholarship Fund are to reduce the financial factor as a determinative factor in a prospective student's decision to enter nursing education, and to promote a spirit of brotherhood, sharing, and servanthood towards mankind. Each candidate for a Clara Stutzman Endowed Scholarship must be enrolled as a full time undergraduate or graduate student at Mennonite College of Nursing, must demonstrate an active spirit of brotherhood, sharing, and servanthood, as indicated by participating in leadership activities, volunteer activities, and /or community related activities, and must demonstrate financial need.

Elizabeth Davis Holder Endowed Scholarship

Undergraduate and graduate full time students are eligible. Candidates must be nontraditional students who demonstrate financial need, be 24 years of age or older, and Illinois residents for at least one year prior to applying for the scholarship.

Helen A. Bender Endowed Scholarship

Candidates must be full time undergraduate or graduate students enrolled at Mennonite College of Nursing at Illinois State University with a grade point average of 3.5 or higher. Candidates must demonstrate financial need in the amount of full tuition or more as documented by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or other such credible information as may be acceptable to the Dean of Mennonite College of Nursing and the Scholarship Committee. Candidates must make a commitment to seek employment as a nurse in the Bloomington-Normal area following graduation, and continue that employment for at least two years from the date of graduation.

Helen Seeley and Ada Seeley Barton Scholarship

Candidates for the Seeley-Barton Scholarship must be female and preferably living off-campus. They must demonstrate financial need, should have promise for success as demonstrated by above average grades, and should have an interest and be active in student affairs.

Helen Tuxhorn Evans Endowed Scholarship

Undergraduate and graduate students are eligible. Candidates must be enrolled half time to full time at Mennonite College of Nursing at Illinois State University. A grade point average of 3.0 or higher is required in the lower division courses. Candidates must demonstrate financial need in the amount of $3,000 or more as documented by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or other such credible information as may be acceptable to the Dean of Mennonite College of Nursing and the Scholarship Committee.

Jeanette Gorecki Scholarship

Candidates must be enrolled and in good academic standing at Illinois State University, working towards the completion of a Bachelor of Science in Nursing or a candidate for a Masters Degree in the area of nursing and/or patient care, and use scholarship funds to defer the many expenses associated with pursuing a degree in the area of nursing. Special consideration will be given to the non-traditional student and to a candidate who embodies the spirit and vision that Jeanette brought to the healthcare community.

Jenny Lu Etcheson Endowed Scholarship

The purpose of The Jenny Lu Etcheson Scholarship Fund is to assist students who have had previous health-related work experience, to return to college to further their nursing education. This scholarship is designated for seniors at Mennonite College of Nursing who have had health-related work experience before returning to college.

The Jesse and Louise Schmied Endowed Scholarship

The purpose of The Jesse and Louise Schmied Scholarship Fund is to reduce the financial burden as a barrier that may prevent an individual from enrolling and/or continuing as a nursing student at Mennonite College of Nursing at Illinois State University. Each candidate for The Jesse and Louise Schmied Endowed Scholarship must demonstrate enrollment as a full time undergraduate or graduate student at Mennonite College of Nursing at Illinois State, a compassionate heart and a desire to serve mankind through excellence in nursing care, a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.75 on a 4.0 scale, a strong potential to succeed, and financial need as required by the Scholarship Fund Administrator. Candidates also must use the scholarship for educational expenses and be non-smokers.

Joslin Endowed Scholarship

Undergraduate and graduate students are eligible. Candidates must be either accepted or enrolled in Mennonite College of Nursing at Illinois State University. A grade point average of 3.5 or higher is required. Candidates must provide a letter of recommendation. Scholarship recipients may apply to receive additional scholarships from this fund if they continue to meet these candidate qualifications.

The LaRue Sloan Scholarship in Nursing

Candidates must be enrolled in good standing at Illinois State University, with at least 60 hours of academic credit towards requirements for graduation from the Mennonite College of Nursing at Illinois State University, must demonstrate strong academic achievement, as evidenced by a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale for all university courses, must demonstrate moderate financial need as documented by the Free Application of Federal Student Aid (or comparable successor application for government assistance), or other such credible information as may be acceptable to the Scholarship Fund Administrator, and must be from a rural agricultural setting, with that defined as a person who grew up on a working farm or from a city, town or village in an agricultural area with a population no larger than twice the population of Bloomfield, Iowa, as defined by most recent census figures, and must use the scholarship for academic expenses. A primary consideration for the Scholarship Committee when assessing qualifying candidates shall be their community service, including assistance to persons with health problems and the elderly population.

Lena Maxwell Endowed Scholarship

Undergraduate full time students are eligible. The undergraduate student must have completed at least the junior year of the nursing major. Candidates must demonstrate concern and compassion in the delivery of nursing care; involvement through service or leadership activities in college and/or community organizations; and a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

M. Rudelle Goodwin Endowed Scholarship

Each candidate for the M. Rudelle Goodwin Nursing Scholarship Fund must be enrolled in good standing at Illinois State University, must have a cumulative grade point average of at least a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, must demonstrate financial need that is not addressed through state and federal funding, and must use award for educational expenses.

Marie Yoder Scholarship

Candidates must be a full-time senior student or graduate student enrolled at Mennonite College of Nursing, must have demonstrated excellent clinical nursing skills and acceptable academic achievement as indicated by an overall GPA of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale and must demonstrate financial need. Preference will be given to those applicants who meet the above criteria and demonstrate active involvement by participation in college, university and/or community activities.

Mennonite Nurses Alumni Association Endowed Student and Transcultural Scholarships

Candidates must be undergraduates or graduates in good standing with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher at Mennonite College of Nursing at Illinois State University. Candidates must demonstrate financial need as documented by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or other such credible information as may be acceptable to the Dean of Mennonite College of Nursing and the Scholarship Committee. With all other factors being equal, priority will be given to Alumni of Mennonite School/College of Nursing or their immediate family (spouse/children).

Candidates must be enrolled in good standing with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher at Mennonite College of Nursing at Illinois State University. Candidates must be enrolled in and earn credit through the specified transcultural courses. With all other factors being equal, priority will be given to Alumni of Mennonite School/College of Nursing or their immediate family (spouse/children).

Peter A. and Ella G. Schertz Endowed Scholarship

Candidates must demonstrate enrollment as full time undergraduate or graduate students at Mennonite College of Nursing; an active spirit of brotherhood, sharing, and servanthood, as indicated by participating in leadership activities, volunteer activities, and/or community related activities; financial need, and must potential for the field of nursing.

Ralph and Mary Esch Endowed Scholarship

Undergraduate and graduate students are eligible. Candidates must be enrolled half time to full time in Mennonite College of Nursing at Illinois State University. Candidates must demonstrate potential for the field of nursing, including those wishing to pursue transcultural experiences.

Richard and Julia Johnson Scholarship Fund

Candidates must be a graduate of a secondary school (or an equivalent degree) in McLean County, IL; a member of an ethnic minority group; and enrolled in good standing at Illinois State.

Virginia Mosbacher Endowed Scholarship

Undergraduate and graduate full time students are eligible. The undergraduate student must have completed the junior year to be eligible for selection. Candidates must submit a three-page typed paper discussing their potential for contributions to the profession of nursing based on the following criteria:

  1. Competency in the application of professional attitudes, knowledge, and skills,
  2. Commitment to the improvement of health care and the advancement of professional nursing,
  3. Intellectual, professional, and personal maturity, and
  4. Participation in scholarly and professional endeavors as well as community service. A grade point average of 3.5 or higher is required.

The Vivian O. Stockdale Nursing Scholarship

Candidates must be enrolled in good standing at Illinois State University, must demonstrate strong academic achievement as evidenced by a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, must demonstrate financial need, and must use the scholarship for educational expenses.
